Key Verse: John 15:5 (NKJV)
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”
Introduction
Knowing Jesus is the first step in our Christian life, but our relationship with Him should not remain merely a past experience. God calls us to abide in Christ every day, connected to the source of life that transforms our hearts and the way we live.
Just as a plant needs to remain connected to its roots to stay green, grow, and bear fruit, we need to remain united with Jesus Christ. A plant may appear healthy for a while, but if it becomes disconnected from its roots, it begins to wither. In the same way, our spiritual lives require a constant relationship with the Lord.
Jesus said that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Therefore, the question is not simply whether we know Christ, but whether we are truly abiding in Him.
1. Turning Away from the Practice of Sin
One of the evidences of abiding in Christ is that our lives begin to reflect a new nature. This does not mean that we will never make mistakes, but that we no longer want to live continually and deliberately practicing sin.
1 John 3:6 teaches us that whoever abides in Christ does not continue living in sin.
When Christ transforms our hearts, He also transforms our desires, thoughts, and attitudes. We begin to recognize what displeases God and develop greater sensitivity to turn away from it.
Abiding in Christ does not mean being perfect, but allowing Him to direct our steps. When we fail, we must acknowledge our mistakes, ask for forgiveness, and return to walking in holiness.
2. Keeping God’s Commandments
Another evidence of our abiding in Christ is obedience to His Word. Jesus taught that those who love Him keep His commandments.
1 John 3:24 reminds us that those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with Him.
Obedience is not simply about following rules out of obligation; it is an expression of our love for Jesus. We cannot choose only the commandments that are convenient for us while setting aside those that challenge the way we live.
There will be times when God’s Word makes us uncomfortable, corrects us, or reveals areas in our lives that need to change. Nevertheless, we must receive it with humility and turn what we learn into practical actions.
Loving Jesus also means being willing to obey Him.
3. Bearing Fruit in Our Lives
Jesus taught in John 15:5 that those who abide in Him will bear much fruit. This fruit must be evident in our daily lives and bring glory to God’s name.
There are three areas in which we should see this fruit:
- Our character: The Lord works in us to develop love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, and self-control. We cannot justify our bad attitudes by saying, “That’s just the way I am.” We must allow Christ to transform our character.
- Our conduct: Our words, jokes, actions, and the way we treat others should increasingly reflect the character of Jesus.
- Our testimony: We should lead others to know Christ, share His Word, and help others grow spiritually.
Fruit is not produced through our own strength, but as a result of remaining united with Jesus. When our relationship with Him is constant, His work begins to become visible in us.
4. Loving Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ
Love for our brothers and sisters in Christ is one of the most visible evidences that we abide in Him.
1 John 2:10 teaches that whoever loves another believer lives in the light and does not cause others to stumble.
Loving others does not always mean feeling a natural connection with everyone. It is a decision to treat others with the love Christ has shown us, even when we have been hurt or when differences exist.
Therefore, we must examine our hearts and ask ourselves whether we are holding on to resentment, feeding bitterness, or avoiding the resolution of conflicts.
Resentment eventually affects our own lives. In contrast, forgiveness, service, and the pursuit of unity help us become instruments of peace.
Christian love is not limited to emotions; it is also demonstrated through our decisions and actions.
5. Walking as Christ Walked
Abiding in Christ means allowing our way of life to be transformed by His example.
1 John 2:6 teaches us that whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as He walked.
Jesus showed us a life of humility, compassion, and service. Although He had all authority, He did not seek to exalt Himself; instead, He served others.
Therefore, we must ask ourselves whether our behavior reflects that same attitude. Do we treat others with humility? Do we have compassion for those who suffer? Are we willing to serve without seeking recognition?
The goal is not simply to imitate Jesus out of obligation, but to allow the new life He has given us to produce genuine transformation.
6. Abiding in His Word
God’s Word is nourishment for our spiritual lives. We should not keep the Bible merely as an object in our homes, but read it, meditate on it, memorize it, and put it into practice.
In John 8:31, Jesus taught that His true disciples remain faithful to His teachings.
Just as we need physical food, we also need spiritual nourishment. Our relationship with God should not depend only on what we hear on Sundays; it must be cultivated every day.
We can establish a Bible-reading plan, set aside time for prayer, and meditate on what the Lord teaches us.
When the Word remains in us, it helps us discern, correct our course, and live according to God’s will.
7. Remaining Faithful to Christ
The final evidence is faithfulness. Abiding in Christ means standing firm in His teachings and remaining faithful to the truth of the gospel.
1 John 2:24 urges us to remain faithful to what we have heard from the beginning so that we may maintain our fellowship with the Father and the Son.
Faithfulness is demonstrated through perseverance, by fulfilling what God has entrusted to us, and by our willingness to give Him our very best.
God’s Word is our highest authority. Therefore, we need to stand firm in its teachings and allow it to guide our decisions.
Christ is not looking for a perfection that none of us can achieve through our own strength. He desires a life that remains united with Him, continues moving forward, and does not abandon the path when difficulties arise.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me remain united with You every day. Examine my heart and show me the areas of my life that need to be transformed. Teach me to turn away from sin, obey Your Word, love my brothers and sisters in Christ, walk in humility, and bear fruit for Your glory. May my life not be merely an outward appearance of faith, but a genuine evidence that You live in me. Strengthen me to remain faithful to You and never turn away from Your path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sincerely, Pastor Guillermo Ayala.
