Week 1: Everything Belongs to Him
Reading Time: 5–7 minutes
Main Scripture: Psalm 24:1 (KJV)
“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
Introduction
Who owns your house, your car, your salary, or everything you have worked so hard to obtain? Our usual answer is, “It’s mine.” However, the Bible invites us to look at our possessions from a different perspective: everything belongs to God.
Generosity begins when we understand that God is the owner of everything and that we are His stewards. Therefore, when we talk about tithes, offerings, or how we use our resources, the question should not be, “How much of what belongs to me should I give to God?” but rather, “How am I managing what already belongs to Him?”
God Owns Everything
The Bible begins by declaring that God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1). As the Creator, He is the owner of everything that exists. In Psalm 50:10–12, the Lord declares that the animals and everything in the world belong to Him. Likewise, in Haggai 2:8, He says, “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine.”
We also belong to Him. We were created by Him and bought with a price, as 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 teaches. Therefore, our lives and possessions should remain under His authority.
When we recognize that God is the owner of everything, we stop living as though everything depends entirely on us and begin to manage responsibly what He has placed in our hands.
Everything We Have Comes from His Hand
In 1 Chronicles 29:14, David acknowledges that everything the people had offered for the construction of the temple came from God. That is why he declares, “For all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.”
David understood that the offering was not something God needed to receive from them as though they were giving Him something that had never belonged to Him. It was a response of gratitude for everything they had received.
In the same way, our abilities, talents, and opportunities also come from the Lord. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us that God gives us the ability to produce wealth, while James 1:17 teaches that every good gift and every perfect gift comes from above.
Therefore, we should not live with pride, as though we had accomplished everything solely through our own strength. Every resource and every opportunity are reasons to thank God and acknowledge His provision.
Giving Is an Expression of Worship
When we understand that everything belongs to God, our attitude toward giving changes. Generosity no longer feels like a loss but becomes an expression of worship, gratitude, and trust in the Lord.
In 1 Chronicles 29:9, we see that the people rejoiced because they gave willingly toward the work of God. They did not give merely out of obligation but with willing and joyful hearts.
Those who understand that they are stewards rather than absolute owners learn to give more freely. This also helps us trust God during difficult times, remembering the words of Job 1:21: “The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
True generosity does not begin with the amount we give but with a conviction in our hearts: everything belongs to God, and we want to honor Him with what He has entrusted to us.
Stewards, Not Owners
Imagine a man who drives a company car. He keeps it clean, puts gas in it, and uses it responsibly, following his employer’s instructions. He would never think of selling it or giving it away because he knows it does not belong to him.
In the same way, we should manage everything God has entrusted to us: our money, our time, our talents, and our possessions. We are not absolute owners but stewards called to act with care, gratitude, and obedience to the will of the Lord.
Practical Application
This week, take some time to examine your heart and the way you manage what God has given you.
- Make a list of your main possessions. Include your house, vehicle, income, talents, and other important resources. Write next to each one: “This belongs to God.”
- Pray and seek the Lord’s direction. Ask Him, “Lord, what do You want me to do with what belongs to You?”
- Accept the weekly challenge. Identify one area of your life—your time, money, or talents—that you have treated as exclusively yours, and surrender it to God in prayer.
Prayer
Lord, today I acknowledge that everything belongs to You. Thank You for my life, my resources, my talents, and every opportunity You have placed in my hands. Forgive me for the times I have lived as though everything belonged to me and forgotten that You are the owner of all things. Teach me to be a wise steward, to give joyfully, and to live with a grateful heart. Show me how I can honor You with my time, finances, and abilities. May my generosity be an expression of my love for You and my trust in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Sincerely, Pastor Guillermo Ayala
